The work of Sunseed Desert Technology is divided into 6 departments that are coordinated by departmental staff members. These staff members work together as a team to ensure the smooth running and development of the project, under the guidance of the Project Manager.

If you are interested in working as one of the staff coordinators at Sunseed, these positions do become available throughout the year and are advertised on a number of sites as well as our own.

Posts are for a minimum of 1 year and are renewable after a successful first year.

Please note that we can only accept applicants who are eligible to stay in the EU for a year or more, and we cannot help with visa application processes.

Dryland Management Job Description

WHAT THE JOB IS ABOUT:

Areas of responsibility will be overseeing the planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and development of a Dryland Management Strategy at Sunseed.

This includes:

Develop and implement a Dryland regeneration plan.

Adaptation of Sunseed grey water system.

Conduct field trials and record results.

Mentor students and researches.

Other points of responsibility include development of and co-operation with external contacts, the writing of monthly reports and applying health and safety rules at work. In addition, as we working in a close team inter-departmental co-operation is desirable.

Although the main language spoken on the project is English we interact with the surrounding community and also Spanish universities and organizations. Whilst it is not essential to speak Spanish it will greatly help in networking and disseminating information.

The Dryland Management Coordinator lives in a small community together with six other staff, full and part-time volunteers and short-term visitors on working holidays, led by a project manager. Living and working conditions are basic and the emphasis is on a sustainable lifestyle, appropriate technology and organic gardening. The post entails general staff duties as well as the practical field work.

The Drylands Coordinator should be enthusiastic with training in ecology, forestry or other plant-based science. Related work experience in semi-arid regions would be an advantage, though a strong interest in soil protection, traditional land management and anti-desertification work is important.

Conditions of Employment

Conditions of Employment as Volunteer staff member.

Benefits of working at Sunseed as Volunteer Staff Assistant include full board: vegetarian meals and lodging in Sunseed houses in Los Molinos, with a beautiful and inspiring landscape. The minimum length of contract is normally 3 months, with the first month as a trial period.

After that 3 months, there is a chance for both parties to reaffirm the agreement, if an assistant is still needed.

Normal working hours are 35 hours/week, but living on the project involves a commitment that extends far beyond the working day and can include anything from rodding blocked pipes to digging out the irrigation line.

You will be entitled to 2 days holiday per month worked plus Spanish bank holidays.

EU-resident visitors to the Project are asked to bring an authorised E111 form or equivalent, obtainable from any Post Office, to cover possible local medical attention, and to have up-to-date tetanus jabs. Staff may, if they so wish, obtain additional medical and travel insurance to cover their stay at Sunseed.
