Other use plants

Title Other use plants
Brief Developing the diversity of our plants and uses of the garden
Description Currently in the gardens the vast majority of our time and effort is spent growing plants for food. Whilst this is incredibly important there are plants for other uses for example natural dyes, glues, soaps, twine, insect repellent etc which would be great to grow, use and educate people about. This project could be anything from a short research project into plants which have these properties to a large project sourcing, nurturing and establishing these in the gardens.
Skills required Interest and knowledge in organic gardening methods.

Using Mycorrhiza

These unique members of the soil community are important for many biological processes through the power of symbiosis. Mycorrhizal fungi form a mutualistic relationship with the roots of 90% of plant species to help plants increase the amount of water and nutrients they can access and achieve better growth and resistance to drought and disease. These species of fungi have also been documented to be important in improving soil structure and accumulating carbon in the soil. This project would involve researching and testing methods of growing Mycorrhizae and then inoculating soils for specific crop plants.

Skills: Interest/knowledge of composting and micro-organisms.

Duration: 3 months

Predatory insects – breeding and habitats / Insectos depredadores – cría y hábitats

Pests can be devastating on crops and so one of the methods of control we would like to look into to lessen this possibility is to research and practice the breeding of wildlife which predate on our most common damaging insects. This project would encompass researching the life cycles and habits of insects and their eco-system to fully understand their interactions and use them most effectively as well as informing our growing methods and crop plans. Another part of this project could be to research and build habitats which would encourage beneficial insects and creatures into the gardens.

Skills: Population ecology knowledge, Interest in Entomology, Wildlife and organic gardening methods, possibly practical building skills, insect care

Duration: 3-6 Months – (seasonally dependent)

Titulo

Open space: eco-construction

In the eco-construction department, volunteers can create their own projects to help them learn how to build in an environmentally sustainable way. This could be anything from experimenting with building techniques and materials, constructing furniture, improving the Sunseed infrastructure in innovative ways… the possibilities are endless! Volunteers are encouraged to be self-starting and undertake their own planning and research, supported by the eco-construction coordinator.

We welcome ideas from volunteers – if you’ve seen an innovative technique or design and would like to try it out, Sunseed might be the perfect playground! Please get in touch with eco.construction@sunseed.org.uk if you would like to work on a volunteer project in the department.
