Hello, I’ve been a volunteer in Sunseed for the last 4 months but only last week I decided to join the ecoconstruction department. I always had in my mind the image of the ecoconstruction site as a place full of men doing heavy physical labour and was unsure whether I’d be able to keep up. But I discovered, it is so not the case… Today, after clearing out some areas by removing away stuff (which warmed me up and gave me a good wake up), we continued with rendering. Rendering is putting a semi-liquid white mixture on rough walls to give them that smooth feeling and typical look of the houses in the area. The materials we use differ depending on whether it’s the outside or the inside surface of a wall. For the inside surface, we mix water with gypsum, a material with properties that regulate the humidity coming from the outside climate.

In our case, the surface was on the outside. So we used a mixture of marble, lime and water. This is absorbent, which makes it ideal for avoiding ersosion from the rain. The area in which we were working was the roof of the kitchen in Isabella’s. On a sunny day like this, there couldn’t be a better working spot. The only downside to that was that to get up there, we needed to climb up a ladder, which with the weight of the materials and my fear of heights, wasn’t an easy task at first. But after getting the hang of it, I can now proudly add it to my list of newly learned skills. In addition, the view of the valley from up there was amazing. And at some point, while waiting for Mirko (he’s the ecoconstruction assistant) to clean the tools we were going to use, I got absorbed to the sounds he was making and along with focusing on the singing of the birds, the neighbours’ working and the occasional trucks passing by the near road, I dived into a short meditation.

The work itself is a true form of art. First with a sponge you wet well the surface you’re going to work at. You put some material on your palet and then using a trowel you apply it on the wall. The idea is to give it an, as much as possible, harmonious shape. You wait for it to be just a little bit drier and then using a slightly wet sponge you move your hands in eight like motions to give the surface a more homogenic look. Even the most skilled renderer cannot do this in one time only. The process is repeated until the shape is satisfactory to the eye. Ah and very important, always remember to clean the tools after, before leaving for a long time like e.g. to eat lunch.

And to do all this under the warmth of the midday sunwhile having nice chats and laughter. It’s great working amongst friends. During breaktime, Leo (the ecoconstruction coordinator) told me and my friend Nacha a beautiful story about the origin of the materials we use and their creation inside the earth. Actually it was more encyclopedic information but being said in Spanish (out respect for Nacha who’s not very comfortable with English just yet) and combined with my pride of managing to understand almost all of it, made it incredibly beautiful to my ears.

And to think that I didn’t want to get out of my bed this morning…

Hola, he sido una voluntaria en Sunseed los ultimos 4 meses pero es solo la semana pasada que decidi unirme al departamento de bioconstruction. Siempre tenia en mi mente la imagen del sitio de bioconstruction como un lugar lleno de hombres haciendo trabajo muy pesado fisicamente y me sentia insegura si podria ir a su ritmo. Pero he descubierto que la actualidad esta muy lejos de esto.

Hoy, despues de limpiar algunas zonas quitando cosas (que me calente y me desperate bien), seguimos con finalizar . Esto consiste en applicar una mezcla semi-liquida sobre los muros asperos para darlos la sensantion y apariencia typical de las casas en esta zona. Los materials que usamos son distintos depende en si la superficie es exterior o interior. Para el interior del muro mezclamos agua con yeso, un material con propriedades que regular la humididad del ambiente exterior.

En nuestro caso, la superficie fue en el exterior. Entoces, usamos una mezcla de mortero, cal y agua. Eso marmol, es hydrofilo, que lo hace ideal para evitar la erosion de la lluvia. La zona en que trabajabamos fue el techo de la nueva cocina en la casa de Isabella. En un dia de sol como este, no pudo ser un sitio major para trabajar. El unico inconveniente de eso fue que para subir alli tuvimos que subir una escalera. Una tarea que con el peso de los materials y mi miedo a las Alturas, no fue facil al principio. Pero despues de habituarme, ahora puedo orgullosamente anadirlo en mi lista de habilidades reciente aprendidas. Valio mucho la pena tambien porque la vista de todo el valle desde alli arriba fue asombrosa. Y en algun punto, mientras esperaba a Mirko (el assistente de bioconstruction) para limpiar los utiles que ivamos a usar, me absorbian los sonidos que hacia y junto con enfocarme en la cancion de los pajaros, los vecinos trabajando y los camiones pasando por la carretera cercano de vez en cuando, me metia en una corta meditation.

El trabajo en si mismo, es de verdad una forma de arte. Al principio con una esponja mojas bien la superficie que vas a trabajar. Tu pones algo de material en tu utile y despues usando una paleta lo applicas en el muro. La idea es darlo de la forma mas harmonica possible. Ni siquiera el mas habil puede hacer eso con una vez solo. El proceso se repite hasta que la forma es satisfactoria para los ojos. Ah… y muy importante: siempre recuerda limpiar los utiles despues de trabajar cuanto por ejemplo te vas por mucho tiempo como para el almuerzo.

Y hacer todo eso bajo el calor del sol de mediodia, mientras tienes Buenos discursiones y un monton de risa. Es fantastic trbajar entre amigos. Durante la pausa, Leo (el coordinador de bioconstruction) nos dijo, a mi y mi amiga Nacha, una historia Hermosa sobre el origen de los materials que usamos y sus creacion dentro de la tierra. En realidad fue mas information enciclopedica pero estando dicho en espanol (con todo respect a Nacha que todavia no esta muy comoda con su ingles y combinado con mi orgullo de poder entender casi todo, la hizo increiblemente Hermosa a mis oidos.

Y pensar que no quise levantarme esta manana…

My Sunseed Experience

I arrived to Sunseed this summer looking for a different and nurturing holiday experience. I was in the mood for learning new things and meeting new and interesting people, something to blow the cobwebs away! I have always been interested in environmental and social issues. I wanted to to experience sustainability in action and get inspired again about how to make the world a better place by people really trying to do it. But I was really also needing a holiday, and the time and space to relax and take time for myself. Luckily, for me, Sunseed satisfied all those needs and more.

My two weeks in Sunseed were incredibly special and I ended my holiday with more knowledge, laughs and great experiences than I could have wished for. The two weeks just flew by and I left feeling refreshed and ready to look at the world with different eyes all over again.

There is always something to do and learn at Sunseed, and always the space and time to be busy if you want to.Everyday is different. But, as a short term volunteer, the timetable really managed to balance my holiday needs exactly : learning and doing in the morning, relaxing in the afternoon, Perfect!

I learned so many new things and worked with some really great people. In two weeks, I tried all of the six departments and worked with all the assistants and coordinators, who do a great job in keeping Sunseed well organised and getting everyone involved. Some of the tasks I helped out with were: making bread; making jam on an alternative technology gasifier; making carob powder; cracking almonds; working with wood; making posters for a festival; collecting fruits; working in the gardens; helping cook for 40 people…it was a full experience. Seminars also take place every week which were really interesting and great for getting the brain and debate going.

Sunseed is also very international and there are plenty of opportunities to have a chat in a foreign language you might be learning. During my stay there were Spanish, French, German, Italian, English, Arabic, Dutch, Finnish and Urdu speakers, a great mix of people, languages and cultures.

If you are interested in coming to Sunseed, you have to do it! It’s a really inspiring, healthy and happy place to be. You will guaranteed lots of fun, great conversations, great people and loads of learning. It’s great for the soul and great for the planet too, the perfect holiday.

Este verano, estuve buscando una experencia de vacaciones diferente y enriquecedora. Tenia la motivacion de aprender cosas nuevas y conocer gente nueva e interesante. Buscaba una experiencia que para recargar energias y respirar aire fresco.

Siempre he estado interesada en las cuestiones ambientales y sociales. Quise experimentar sostenibilidad en accion y me inspiraba de Sunseed ver como hacer del mundo un lugar mejor!Pero tambien, necesitaba muchas vacaciones y el tiempo y espacio para relajarme. Por suerte para mi, Sunseed satisfazo todo que necesitaba y mucho mas.

Mis dos semanas en Sunseed fueron muy especiales y termine mis vacaciones con mas conocimiento, risas y experencias buenas de las que podria haber deseado. Los dos semanas pasaron volando y al irme me sentia mucho mejor y lista para ver el mundo con nuevos ojos.

En Sunseed, hay muchas cosas que hacer y aprender. Siempre hay espacio y tiempo para estar muy ocupado si quieres. Todos los dias son diferentes. Como voluntaria a corto plazo, el horario fue perfecto para mis vacaciones: aprender y trabajar por las mananas y relajarme por las tardes. Perfecto!

Apprendi tantas cosas nuevas y trabaje con gente muy buena. Durante dos semanas, colabore con todos los departamentos y trabaje con todos los asistentes y los coordinadores. El personal trabaja mucho para mantener Sunseed y organiza las tareas donde siempre incluye a los voluntarios. Por ejemplo pude colaborar en la realizacion de las siguientes tareas : hacer pan; hacar mermelada con una cocina de gasificación de biomasa; hacer harina de algarroba; trabajar con madera; hacer carteles para una feria; recoger frutas; trabajar en los huertos; ayudar cocinando para 40 personas…fue una experencia muy completa. Hay tambien seminarios cada semana que son muy interesantes y en los que surjen debates muy enriquecedores.

Tambien Sunseed es muy internacional y siempre hay muchas oportunidades para charlar en un idioma extranjero. Durante mi estancia habia gente que hablaba espanol, frances, aleman, italiano, ingles, arabe, holandes, finlandes y urdu. Habia una gran mezcla de gente, idiomas y culturas.

Si estas interesado en venir a Sunseed, tienes que hacerlo! Es un lugar muy inspirador, saludable y alegre. Esta garantizada mucha diversion, conversaciones muy buenas, gente fantastica y muchas cosas que aprender. Es estupendo para el alma y el planeta, vacaciones perfectas!

Irinas Story at Sunseed

I came to Sunseed with no special reason. To be honest, I didn’t know where I was going to and what I was going to do there. Maybe that is why this place is so exclusive for me.

Here everything is quite different from what I am used to have – the food, working process, people, culture, attitude to life. I have been here for 3 months, and I don’t want to come back to my previous life anymore. Here I get all I need – experience, knowledge, freedom, friends, lots of emotions, an amazing mentor… I have done things that I thought I would never do. I am glad I have.

It is not just work, it is a contiuous process of learning. We are not bounded, we are allowed to make our own mistakes and learn from them. We are not scared of trying new things as we know that there is always a person who can help or teach you.

I am happy to work in the AT department with Paco who is one of the BEST people I have ever met in my life. I mean it. We are a real team, we are having fun reorganizing the workshop, making new shelves and benches, and playing ping-pong on the table we have built together. I enjoy working with Pako because his happiness and positive attitude to things makes my life better. Thank you, Sunseed, for Paco! Thank you, Paco, for being such a great person!

I see Sunseed as a place where you can learn and teach, get and share, work and rest. It’s a good place for practicing English and learning Spanish. That is the best place for changing your life for the best.

Now it’s summer.The weather is wonderful, the sun is shining, birds are singing. The air is clean. A pond is 3 minutes walking from the house. What else do you need to be happy?

Yo vine en Sunseed sin una razon especial. A decir verdad, no sabia donde iba y que pensaba hacer aqui. Quizas por eso este lugar es tan exclusivo para mi.

Aqui todo es bastante diferente a lo que estaba acostumbra – la comida, el trabajo, la gente, la cultura y la actitud ante vida. He estado aqui 3 meses, y ya no quiero volver a mi vida anterior. Aqui yo tengo todo que nesesito – experiencia, conocimiento, independencia, amigos, un monton de emociones y un tutor increible.

No es solo trabajo, es un proceso continuo de aprendizaje. No tenemos “limites”, podemos cometer errores y aprender de ellos. No tenemos miedo de poner en practica nuevas ideas ya que sabemos que siempre hay alguien que te puede ayudar o ensenar.

Soy afortunada en trabajar en el departamento de Technologia Apropriada con Paco, es una de las mejores personas que he conocido en mi vida. Lo digo en serio, somos un equipo real. Nos divertimos trabajando en el taller, haciendo estantes y bancos nuevos o jugando al ping-pong en la mesa que nosotros mismos construimos. Disfruto mucho trabajando con el, porque su alegria y actitud positiva me hace sentir bien. Gracias Sunseed, por tener gente como Paco! Es una persona estupenda!

Creo que Sunseed es un lugar donde puedes aprender y ensenar, obtener y compartir, trabajar y descansar. Es un lugar bueno para practicar ingles y aprender espanol. Es el mejor lugar para cambiar tu vida.

Ahora es el verano. El tiempo es maravilloso, el sol brilla y los pajaros cantan. El aire es limpio. La charca esta a 3 minutos de la casa,…Que mas necesitas para ser feliz!?

A Volunteer Story: Clemens

In June 2012 I completed secondary school in Germany with the aim of studying architecture at university. Although I already knew what I want to study I decided to take off a “gap year” in order to experience different cultures and lifestyles. I came to Sunseed almost straight after having returned from India, where I spent 4 months working in a social project and living with an Indian family. During my first days I learnt the “basics” of the daily life here. I cooked lunch together with my lovely “mentora” Ana, I attended the different tours through the village and the area and I met great people. Whenever I needed help people didn’t hesitate to show me around.

Soon I got more and more integrated into the community and after having been here for more than six weeks I feel very comfortable with everybody and I think I have already found great friends. I am especially happy with my roommates: Roberto and Fosca from Italy and Irina from Russia. Together we stay in the big dorm for long-term volunteers in Gaye’s house. We started hanging out, going for hikes and soon grew very close, so now we are fondly call ourselves “La Famiglia”.

I don’t only enjoy the people here, but also the work. Since I want to become an architect I mostly work in the Eco-Construction Department, where I learn a lot about constructing and renovating houses with natural materials. It is very pleasant to work with Johann (the ECM assistant) and Leo (the coordinator). They teach me a lot about working on the exterior and interior of houses e.g. plastering, rendering or constructing furniture. Leo always plays music from his portable speaker which converts rendering the wall into a party or a meditation, depending on the genre of music. Although eco-construction is my favourite field I occasionally work in other departments as well, for example in the AT department with Paco. At the moment we experiment and research on biomass-gassifiers which can be used to cook, especially in developing countries, where there is a lack of fuel. This is a very interesting project and will be featured in a separate article.

As we are in the middle of May now, it is getting hotter and soon we are going to switch to the summer working times. This will give us some siesta during the hottest time of the day, and we will have the opportunity to jump in the natural pools of the river, right in front of our backyard. Sunseed is all about learning. Its main aim is learning how to live ecologically, how to treat wastewater, how to grow organic food etc. But there is another level of learning. Its sharing talents and teaching each other. You can practice your English (even slang and weird London or Yorkshire accents) and your Spanish with people around. Once a week we have a seminar, where we share and discuss upon topics concerning the society. On Thursday Martin offers free guitar lessons to everybody who is interested and Mohammed from Yemen has started teaching Arabic. Sunseed is the perfect place, if you are open to learn and experience new things. This weekend some of us have organised a trip to Granada and quite a lot have joined in. We can almost say that we are organising a “Sunseed on tour” as more than 10 people will be there to enjoy this pre-summer weekend in such a beautiful town. I am especially excited, since I’m turning 21 this Friday and we are going to celebrate in Granada. To conclude, I can just say: I am happy and grateful to be here, to work, learn, experiment, experience and share with everybody.

En junio de 2012 acabé mi bachillerato en Alemanía con el intento de empezar estudiando arquitectura en la Universidad. Aún si sabía lo que quería hacer, decidí tomarme un año “libre” para experimentar y vivir estilos de vida y culturas diferentes. Después de 4 meses en India trabajando en un proyecto social y viviendo con una familia Indiana, vine aquí en Sunseed casi en seguida. Durante los primeros días aprendí las “bases” de la vida diaria aquí. Cociné la comida junto con mi adorable “mentora” Ana, seguí distintas visitas en la ecoaldea y conocí a mucha gente. Al necesitar ayuda, siempre hay gente disponible para explicarme lo que puedo dudar.

Fui integrándome pronto en la comunidad y después de 6 semanas viviendo aquí, me siento a gusto con todos y creo que he encontrado buenos amigos. En particular, estoy muy contento con mi compañeros de cuarto: Roberto y Fosca de Italia e Irina de Rusia. Estamos todos en el mismo grande cuarto de los voluntarios de largo plazo en Gaye’s House. Pasamos mucho tiempo juntos, vamos a dar paseos, y ahora nos llamamos cariñosamente “La Famiglia”.

No solo me gustan las personas aquí, sino también el trabajo. Dado que me gustaría ser arquitecto, trabajo principalmente en el departamento de eco-construcción, donde he aprendido mucho sobre como se puede construir y renovar casas usando materiales naturales. Es muy agradable trabajar con Johann (el asistente del departamento) y Leo (el coordinador). Ellos me han enseñado algunos trabajos al exterior y al interior de la casa, por ejemplo: enlucir, pintar y construir muebles. Leo siempre pone música con su altavoz portable y esto convierte el trabajo en una fiesta o en un momento de meditación, depende del tipo de música que pone. Aunque eco-construcción es el departamento que me gusta más, trabajo también en otros departamentos, como por ejemplo en él de Tecnología Apropriada (AT) con Paco. Ahora estamos investigando y experimentando sobre gasificadores de biomasa que se pueden usar para cocinar, en particular en Países en vía de desarrollo donde el combustible es limitado. Este es un proyecto muy interesante y me gustaría hablarlo en otro artículo.

Como estamos a mayo, los días se hacen cada vez más calientes y vamos a cambiar los horarios de trabajo. De esta manera tendremos tiempo también para una siesta en las horas más calientes del día y tenremos también la posibilidad de aprovechar de la piscinas naturales de río. Sunseed se basa en la educación. Su objetivo primario es demonstrar como se puede vivir de manera ecológica, como se puede gestionar las aguas residuales, como se puede cultivar vegetales de manera orgánica,… Pero hay otro nivel de aprendizaje que se realiza en compartir conocimientos con los otros. Puedes practicar el inglés (incluso jergas y acentos extraños como los de Londres o del Yorkshire) y también el español con las personas que viven aquí. Una vez por semana se organiza un seminario donde se puede hablar sobre temas de nuestra sociedad. Los jueves Martin nos da clase de guitarra y Mohammed (de Yemen) nos enseña el árabe. Sunseed es el lugar perfecto si quieres aprender y experimentar cosas nuevas. Entre nosotros hemos organizado un viaje a Granada para este fin de semana y somos muchos. Podemos decir que estamos organizando un “Sunseed on tour” porque más de 10 personas irán a Granada para disfrutar de esta maravillosa ciudad. En particular yo estoy muy emocionado porque el viernes será mi cumpleaño e iremos a festejarlo en Granada. Concluyendo, puedo solo decir: soy feliz en estar en un lugar tan agradable, trabajando, experimentando, haciendo distintas experiencias y compartiendo con todos los que viven aquí.
