Appropriate Technology Dept. Sunseed activities August 2013

On August we have dealt with the consolidation of the two projects we have in place: the  biomass gasification cookstove and the solar oven. There have been many volunteers who participated, each making a small contribution or many hours of design, action, observation, correction and enthusiasm. Both projects are an example of appropriate technology, as we reuse materials and apply simple construction techniques. They are everyday tools for cooking using renewable energy and having, therefore, a low environmental impact. El mes de Agosto lo hemos ocupado con la consolidación de los dos proyectos que tenemos en marcha: la cocina de gasificación de biomasa y el horno solar. Muchos han sido los voluntari@s que han participado, cada uno dejando una pequeña aportación o muchísimas horas de diseño, acción, observación, corrección y entusiasmo. Ambos proyectos son un ejemplo de tecnología apropiada,  pues recurren a simples materiales y técnicas constructivas. Por otro lado, son herramientas de uso cotidiano para cocinar utilizando energía renovable y teniendo, por tanto, un bajo impacto medioambiental. IMG_5657.JPGIMG_5630.JPG The system consists of two separately developed parts: the biomass gasifier and the kitchen itself. During the year, we have developed several prototypes of gasifiers, all designed with our original ideas, using materials that have been recycled or low cost. Thus was born the series Kana! TLUD type gasifier, with versions 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 ( Vídeos: Kaña 1.0   /    Kaña 2.0 ) The structure includes a cooking area for pots and oven that harnesses the heat output of the stove to warm up. You can use either the various gasifiers, depending on how much heat output you want,  as long  you want to cook and the biomass that we will use. However, we have developed a larger version of Kaña for more burning time and power. Thus was born Kanon!, The big brother of the series and it works perfectly with any biomass. Can be refueled on the fly and gives high energy heat for over two hours if we are interested.

To finish the stove, we are preparing a layer of insulation for the oven box and strengthen the structure of the support legs. After this we will bring down to the main house, where will  incorporate as an alternative system to daily sustainable cooking. The other ongoing project is a large-capacity solar oven in which to cook large amounts of food. Mohamed and Simon are jointly developing a furnace with the following characteristics: large volume (90x90x45cm), outer reflector 90x90cm, interior thermal mass, walls made with wood-insulation-wood sandwich, outer layer fiberglass  and double glazing in the entrance of the sunshine.
In early tests, have surpassed 100 C degrees. Is expected to reach 150, which will be another tool for sustainable cooking, whenever the sun allows. (Snitch note: last, last test has already reached 144 C degrees…) September, my last month in Sunseed, will be the inauguration month for both projects. El sistema consta de dos partes, desarrolladas por separado: el gasificador de biomasa, y la propia cocina en sí. Durante el año, hemos ido desarrollando diversos prototipos de gasificadores, todos diseñados con ideas originales propias, utilizando materiales que se han ido reciclando o de bajo coste. Así nació las serie KAÑA!!! de gasificadores tipo TLUD, con las versiones 1.0, 1.5 y 2.0 ( Vídeos: Kaña 1.0   /    Kaña 2.0 ) La estructura incluye un área para cocinar con ollas y un horno que aprovecha la salida de calor del hornillo para calentarse. Se pueden utilizar indistintamente los diversos hornillos, en función de cuánta potencia calorífica deseamos, el tiempo que queremos cocinar o la biomasa que vamos a utilizar. No obstante, hemos desarrollado una versión de los Kaña de mayores dimensiones, para obtener más duración de la combustión y potencia. Así ha nacido Kañón!!!, el hermano grande de la serie y que funciona perfectamente con cualquier biomasa, se puede recargar y nos da alta energía calorífica durante más de dos horas si nos interesa.
Para finalizar la cocina, estamos preparando una capa de aislamiento para la zona del horno y reforzando la estructura de las patas de soporte. A continuación, será trasladada a la casa principal donde se incorporará como sistema alternativo para cocinar de manera sostenible. El otro proyecto en marcha es un horno solar de gran capacidad en el que poder cocinar un gran volumen de comida.  Mohamed y Simon están desarrollando conjuntamente un horno con las siguientes características: gran volumen (90x90x45cm), reflector exterior 90x90cm, masa térmica interior, paredes de sandwich madera-aislante-madera, exterior en fibra de vidrio y doble cristal para la entrada de los rayos de sol.
En las primeras pruebas, se han sobrepasado los 100 grados de temperatura. Se espera poder llegar a los 150, con lo que será otra herramienta más para cocina sostenible, siempre que el sol lo permita.
(Nota chivata: ya ha llegado a marcar 144 grados el termómetro…)
Septiembre, mi último mes en Sunseed, va a ser el mes de inauguración de ambos proyectos. No hay nada como encontrar excusas para hacer pasteles y pizzas 😀
