The Drylands Department harvested two carob trees near Mokey’s Head this tuesday. The brown, dry, ratteling pods that contain the acutal seeds can be picked or shaken easiliy from the low growing trees. The walk there might be a bit adventurous though– especially when the tree is situatued on a slope, between two giant rocks!….Carob trees are native of Southern Spain and are a good food resource in this dry area. The pods contain a lot of natural sugar and can be grounded to be used as flour or a chocolate substitute. We clean and keep some of the seeds to add them to our seed bank of native plants.

El Departamento ha cosechado tres algarrobos cerca del pico de “Moky´s head”. Las algarrobas maduras, pueden ser recolectadas fácilmente bareando las ramas o simplemente zanandehándolas un poco. El paseo hasta allí puede ser un poco aventurero, sobre todo cuando el árbol está situatuado en una pendiente, entre dos rocas gigantes!…Los Algarrobos son nativos del sur de España. Son una buena fuente de alimento, sus vainas contienen una gran cantidad de azúcar natural y pueden ser utilizadas como sustituto de la harina o del chocolate. Las semillas, contenidas dentro de la vaina, se incluyen en nuestro banco de semillas de plantas nativas.

Written by Delia Hernández, drylands management volunteer”. “Today, Eugenio started his holidays, and Pier Giorgio was feeling inspired. As a good Italian, a beauty lover, he thought about decorating the paths with stones, and so, marking the paths for the visitors that go through Arboretum. The task was not easy…We started in a very primitive way, going down to the part closest to the laguna to pick up stones, and get them up in buckets,…but afterwards, we bettered the technique by using a two people carrier, which made the task a bit easier and quick. While two of us were doing this, another person remained in Alboretum placing each stone very firmly: making a hole with a shovel to place the stone, and then fix it to the ground with soil and water, pressing it until it was strongly fixed on the ground…This work lasted at least two weeks but, in the end, it became a success,…very beautiful indeed,…exactly as Pier Giorgio visualized it in his dreams, when asleep.

Completing this work, and in order for Arboretum to become even more beautiful, we thought of freeing its soil from its weeds, as they have no use for there, and so, allowing the soil for the air to circulate sufficiently…We started by using only shovels, but afterwards, we discovered that the best way to uproot them was by using also the garden fork, which proved to be very efficient for the task.”

Como buen italiano, amante de la belleza, pensó en adornar los caminos con piedras, marcando así el paso de los visitantes a través de Arboretum. La tarea no era fácil…Empezamos de una manera muy primitiva: bajando a la parte cercana a la poza para recoger piedras y subirlas arriba en cubos,…pero después, mejoramos la técnica usando un transportador a dos personas, lo cual hizo la tarea un poco más fácil y rápida… Mientras dos hacían esto, otra persona se quedaba en Arboretum, colocando cada piedra de una manera firme: haciendo un hoyo con una pala para colocar la piedra y fijándola con tierra y agua, presionándola hasta quedar fuertemente fijada…Este trabajo nos llevó al menos una semana, pero al final quedó muy bonito, tal y como Pier Giorgio lo visualizó en sus sueños, mientras dormía.

Completando este trabajo, y para que el Alboretum quedara aún más bonito, pensamos en librar su tierra de las plantas secas que de por sí no tienen ninguna utilidad ahí, aireando así la tierra bastante…Empezamos primero usando solo palas, pero después descubrimos que la mejor manera de arrancarlas de raíz es usando también un tridente, lo cual probó ser muy eficaz… Trabajamos tanto, que ahora Arboretum parece un poco más grande y despejado de malas hierbas,…un lugar bello para disfrutar”.

Written by Delia Hernández, drylands management volunteer. “Some days ago we worked in the horizontal filters, part of the waste water system. We saw that some mints from the first section were dried, and we had to replace them with clusters of fresh mints, situated in the third section, which appeared to be very beautiful and strong. We divided ourselves into two groups of two people: two of us uprooted the dead mints and made new holes to place the fresh mints. The other two, selected these other ones, and planted them in the second section, in the place occupied by the dead ones. Why did these plants died?…Well, for several reasons. One of them, maybe from the fact that when planting them, we did not dig deep enough holes, and so, their roots could not absorb well the water they needed. We always learn from our errors, and because of this, the newly planted ones look fantastic…It feels good to just observe them and to see that the hydropolic area flows well down to end where the comfreys are,…its last fase,…everything looking very, very green”.

En los filtros horizontales, en la primera cama, la menta estaba seca y se reemplazó con ramilletes de menta fresca situadas en la tercera cama, las cuales lucían muy bonitas y fuertes. Nos dividimos en dos grupos de dos personas: mientras dos arrancaban la menta muerta y preparaban los hoyos para recibir las mentas frescas de la tercera cama,…los otros dos seleccionaban éstas últimas de esa balsa y las plantaban en la segunda balsa, en el lugar que ocupaban las otras muertas. ¿Por qué se murieron estas plantas?…Pues por varias razones. Una de ellas, quizás por el hecho de que al plantarlas no se les dio suficiente profundidad a sus hoyos, y por eso sus raíces no pudieron absorber bien el agua que necesitaban. Siempre se aprende de los errores, y por eso, las nuevas plantadas lucen fantásticas,…Da gusto observarlas y ver como el espacio hidropólico fluye bien, hasta llegar a donde las consueldas están,…la última fase,…todo verdito, verdito.”

by Pako Ibáñez, Appropriate Technology Department at Sunseed. On August we have dealt with the consolidation of the two projects we have in place: the biomass gasification cookstove and the solar oven. There have been many volunteers who participated, each making a small contribution or many hours of design, action, observation, correction and enthusiasm. Both projects are an example of appropriate technology, as we reuse materials and apply simple construction techniques. They are everyday tools for cooking using renewable energy and having, therefore, a low environmental impact.

Ambos proyectos son un ejemplo de tecnología apropiada, pues recurren a simples materiales y técnicas constructivas. Low impact and sustainable living at Sunseed summer 2013

This summer we have picked agave-fruits (pita) right after the flower. The plant dies once it had flowers and fruits. We conserved the fruits with vinegar and oniens.

We made different marmelades this year starting with orange marmelade, than one made of loquats, than apricots, molberries, plums, blackberries, figs and grape-vines. We also dried apricots in the solar dryer to have somthing to enjoy in wintertime.

The grape-vines we also dried to make raisins. For this purpose we put them in the solar dryer or hang them on a long stick in the house.

In the drylands (cooperation with dryland department) we picked capers (caper bulbs and caper fruits) to conserve them in vinegar and water.

We also dried the fruits from the carrob trees in the drylands in the solar dryer so that they can be smashed more easily. After that we made a poweder of them – similar to cacao. This we used to make carob-cakes, creamy chocolate-alternatives and drinks.

As a workshop together with the drylands department we made a horehound-liquid for the stomac with horehound, peppermint, honey, sugar, lemon and one jar even with onions. This is super-healthy and very tasty. .

Another workshop we offerd for a shool-visit was to make natural tooth-paste of clay and several other ingredients like oil, green tea, peppermint and other herbs.

We use the prickly peir fruits for making a tasty juice – very tropical!

With esparto-grass we made sponges:

Many times we cracked almonds to use them for cooking, for making cakes or for making almond-milk. Almond-milk: leave the nuts one day in the water, than smash them with the blender, than separate the nut-rests from the liquid. For one cup of almonds you need one liter of water. We also once or twice this summer made caramelised almonds: one cup almonds, half a cup sugar, quarter of a cup water – mixed together in a frying-pan and fried until the sugar gets solid.

Hemos recolectado los frutos del agave (pita), cuando estaban bastante frescos. Hemos conservadolos amacerados en vinagre y cebolla – están buenísimos.

Por cada temporada hemos realizado mermeladas de distintos frutos, como de ciruelas, higos, moras y uvas. Hemos secado en el secador solar algunos albaricoques para tener provisiones para el invierno y poder disfrutarlos.

Con la uvas las secamos para hacer pasas (dentro de la casa, colgadas de una caña) y con las demás hemos hecho mermelada.

Preparación de alcaparras, el fruto también, las dos cosas, alcaparras y alcaparrones. Para conservarlas durante mas tiempo las hemos puesto en vinagre y agua.

Las algarrobas las hemos secado en el secador solar y despues las hemos triturado y molido, sacando polvo de algarroba usado para hacer repostería y también batidos.

Como taller, junto con el departamento de tierras secas, hemos elaborado un jarabe para el estomago, con marrubio, miel, limón, azúcar y una vec tambien con cebollas. Está super bueno y tiene muchas propiedades.

Otro taller que hicimos fue pasta de dientes natural con arcilla, cuando vino el colegio a visitarnos fue la actividad que realizaron con el Departamento de Vida Sostenible.

Ahora empiezan la temporada de la chumba, esta programado hacer mermelada, de momento hemos hecho mas batidos, muy tropical.

Las almendras que tenemos hemos realizado leche de almendras, dejándolas por un día en agua, luego las hemos pasado por la batidora, y separado el fruto del liquido. Por una taza de almendras y litro de agua.

Introductory course about drylands management. Regeneration and use of natural sources

Two-day workshop with Eugenio Peñalvo Lopez about sustainable drylands management in the long term within the context of the Paraje Natural de Karst en Yesos in Sorbas. We will study the use of low-impact techniques for the regeneration of the vegetal cover and the use of the sources. We will analyse the maintenance of the wastewater and greywater system.

The course starts on Saturday, but it is possible to arrive on Friday. It finishes on Sunday at 17:00 h. Maximum number of participants is 10. Reserved needed.

BIOMASS GASIFICATION STOVES

Introductory course of biomass gasification Stoves for cooking. To get familiar with theoretical and practical aspects. Justify the use of biomass as fuel for cooking.

Understanding the principles of the gasification.
Recognition of the biomass close to us as fuel for stoves gasifiers.
Collect and prepare biomass for fuel.
Understand the main designs of biomass gasification stoves.
Individualized construction of a stove and its implementation.

Two-day course with Pako Ibañez about theory and practice of biomass gasification stoves: a basic introduction for anybody who is interested in learning about these systems and their components and would like to understand how they work.

It includes: comprehension of the principles of gasification, recognition of biomass close to us that can be used as a fuel, recollection and preparation of biomass as a fuel, comprehension of the main designs of biomass gasification stoves.

In addition, we will study and analyse the importance of biomass as an ecological fuel for cooking.

Each participant will make his/her own stove to bring at home.

SEED SAVING: Heirloom & other open-pollinated varieties

Introductory course about seed selection, extraction and storage. To get familiar with theoretical and practical aspects.

With the widespread use of hybrid and modern varieties and the dominance of a few multinational seed companies, we experience an incredibly rapid loss in diversity in our gardens and on our plates. Learn how to select and save your own seeds from different varieties of veggies and aromatics: adapt your varieties to your personal choices and your garden’s needs, maintain and enhance productivity, save money on seeds, interchange with fellow gardeners, become independent from the availability of one or another variety and the international seed business, contribute to the preservation of our cultural and enjoy a closer connection with and deeper understanding of your plants and garden.

The course starts on Saturday morning and finishes at 18:00. Maximum number of participants is 10. Reservation needed.

12 and 13 October

FORMATIVE VISIT TO LOW IMPACT PROJECT

Weekend in environmental and low impact project to learn about alternative ways of living. We will do different workshops on basic principles to live with low impact. The course includes guided tour of Sunseed project, activities cooking with the sun, workshops on biomass gasification stoves, on bread making and introduction to organic gardening theory and practices.

Two-day course for people interested in low impact living and environmental awareness. We will get familiar with some of low impact ways of living.

The course starts on Saturday, but it is possible to arrive on Friday. We will have a little introduction on low impact living and finish on Sunday at 17:00 h. Maximum number of participants is 10. Reserved needed.

INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC GARDENING

This course will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of organic gardening.

Two-day course on organic gardening. Topics covered include: planning your garden around the elements (sun, water, soil, wind), making and using compost and animal manures, irrigation systems, choosing and using tools, assessing soil health (pH, nutrients, organic matter content), basic soil ecology, mulching, home-made liquid fertilisers, plant propagation, crop rotations, saving and storing seeds.

The course starts on Saturday, but it is possible to arrive on Friday. We will have a little introduction to Sunseed Desert Technology Project and on the course. It finishes on Sunday at 17:00 h. Maximum number of participants is 10. Drylands vegetation surveys

The department has recently completed the plant surveys for the areas of “Alan`s Land”, “Monkey’s Head” and “Donkey Corral”. These surveys will be used to support a management plan for vegetal regeneration. The surveys are intended to establish and identify dominant plant communities, estimation of number of species and percentages of coverage. A preliminary phase has been carried out. This consists in the production of maps for the location of the areas to be surveyed. Then, for each area, we proceeded to the identification and description of areas with similar land use capability (cultivated terraces, slopes, gullies, etc.) and the division into transects. The transects were surveyed with the counting of tree species and shrub species such as “albaida”, “albaidilla”, “ephedra”, “retama”, etc. Small shrubs and herbaceous are included in a list with information about their origin, abundance and sociability. To finish, a percentage has been established for vegetation cover for each transect. So far there has been found 176 species of plants, including wild and planted. Some of them are valuable local species, plants well adapted to gypsum environments such as Coris hispanica, Ononis tridentata, Teucrium turredanum and Santolina viscosa.

El departamento ha finalizado recientemente los inventarios de plantas para las áreas de “Alan’s Land”, “Monkey´s Head” y “Donkey Coral”. Estos inventarios forman parte del plan de gestión y regeneración de la cubierta vegetal. Los inventarios tienen como objetivo la estimación del número de especies presentes, porcentajes de cobertura vegetal y la identificación de comunidades vegetales predominantes. Previamente a los inventarios, se ha realizado la cartografía para la localización de las áreas a inventariar. Para cada una de ellas, se ha procedido a la identificación y descripción de ares con similar capacidad de uso del suelo (bancales de cultivo, laderas, cárcavas, etc) y su división en transectos. Los transectos son inventariados llevando a cabo el conteo de especies arbóreas y algunas de las arbustivas como albaida, albaidilla, efedra y retama entre otras. Los matorrales más pequeños y las especies herbáceas son listadas con anotaciones relativas a su origen, abundancia y sociabilidad. Para finalizar, se establece un porcentaje de cobertura vegetal para cada transecto. Hasta ahora se han encontrado 176 especies de plantas, incluyendo aquellas espontáneas y plantadas. Algunos de ellas son valiosas especies locales muy bien adaptadas a suelos yesíferos tales como Coris hispanica, Ononis tridentata, Teucrium turredanum o Santolina viscosa.

I came to Sunseed with no special reason. To be honest, I didn’t know where I was going to and what I was going to do there. Maybe that is why this place is so exclusive for me.

Here everything is quite different from what I am used to have – the food, working process, people, culture, attitude to life. I have been here for 3 months, and I don’t want to come back to my previous life anymore. Here I get all I need – experience, knowledge, freedom, friends, lots of emotions, an amazing mentor… I have done things that I thought I would never do. I am glad I have.

It is not just work, it is a contiuous process of learning. We are not bounded, we are allowed to make our own mistakes and learn from them. We are not scared of trying new things as we know that there is always a person who can help or teach you.

I am happy to work in the AT department with Paco who is one of the BEST people I have ever met in my life. I mean it. We are a real team, we are having fun reorganizing the workshop, making new shelves and benches, and playing ping-pong on the table we have built together. I enjoy working with Pako because his happiness and positive attitude to things makes my life better. Thank you, Sunseed, for Paco! Thank you, Paco, for being such a great person!

I see Sunseed as a place where you can learn and teach, get and share, work and rest. It’s a good place for practicing English and learning Spanish. That is the best place for changing your life for the best.

Now it’s summer.The weather is wonderful, the sun is shining, birds are singing. The air is clean. A pond is 3 minutes walking from the house. What else do you need to be happy?

Yo vine en Sunseed sin una razon especial. A decir verdad, no sabia donde iba y que pensaba hacer aqui. Quizas por eso este lugar es tan exclusivo para mi.

Aqui todo es bastante diferente a lo que estaba acostumbra – la comida, el trabajo, la gente, la cultura y la actitud ante vida. He estado aqui 3 meses, y ya no quiero volver a mi vida anterior. Aqui yo tengo todo que nesesito – experiencia, conocimiento, independencia, amigos, un monton de emociones y un tutor increible.

No es solo trabajo, es un proceso continuo de aprendizaje. No tenemos “limites”, podemos cometer errores y aprender de ellos. No tenemos miedo de poner en practica nuevas ideas ya que sabemos que siempre hay alguien que te puede ayudar o ensenar.

Soy afortunada en trabajar en el departamento de Technologia Apropriada con Paco, es una de las mejores personas que he conocido en mi vida. Lo digo en serio, somos un equipo real. Nos divertimos trabajando en el taller, haciendo estantes y bancos nuevos o jugando al ping-pong en la mesa que nosotros mismos construimos. Disfruto mucho trabajando con el, porque su alegria y actitud positiva me hace sentir bien. Gracias Sunseed, por tener gente como Paco! Es una persona estupenda!

Creo que Sunseed es un lugar donde puedes aprender y ensenar, obtener y compartir, trabajar y descansar. Es un lugar bueno para practicar ingles y aprender espanol. Es el mejor lugar para cambiar tu vida.

Ahora es el verano. El tiempo es maravilloso, el sol brilla y los pajaros cantan. El aire es limpio. La charca esta a 3 minutos de la casa,…Que mas necesitas para ser feliz!?
